Murfreesboro City Councilman, Toby Gilley, Announces His Support for Moving Murfreesboro City Elections to August Murfreesboro, TN. Republican Toby Gilley declares his support for moving Murfreesboro City Elections to Rutherford County's August Primary election date. Currently, Murfreesboro City elections are held on the third Tuesday of April and have seen a dramatic decrease in voter participation. Toby Gilley stated, "I recently learned from Election Commissioner, Nicole Lester, that due to new State guidelines, the City Elections will cost nearly $67,000, a substantial increase from prior elections. This expense to the taxpayer is unneeded and can be eliminated if we simply move City Elections to the August Primary election date. Additionally, I have spoken to several voters that thought the City Election was held last week on March 6th's Rutherford County Primary election night. The combination of low voter turnout, confusion and expense warrant a move of the City Election to an August date." Councilman Gilley has served the citizens of Murfreesboro for 12 years on the Council and looks forward to another term in order to address issues such as Safe and Livable Neighborhoods, providing a healthy environment for Small Business Growth and continuing to improve Education and Recreation resources for the community. During his 12 years on the City Council Toby has chaired the Risk Management Committee, served on the Water Board, the Planning Commission and represented the City Council on the Cable Commission and Library Board. Additionally, Mr. Gilley serves as the Treasurer for the Republican Party of Rutherford County, is in his 5th year as an Adjunct Professor at MTSU, and volunteers for Special Olympics and Read to Succeed. He and his wife Laurie have been married for 13 years and have two children that attend Murfreesboro public schools. Toby received his undergraduate degree at MTSU, performed 2 years of graduate studies in Criminal Justice at MTSU and received the Law Degree from UT Knoxville. He is a partner at Rucker, Rucker & Gilley Law Firm on the historic Murfreesboro Square.
